[RingsideBiz.com] Charitable Giving: What Boxing is Lacking; One Boxer's Giving |
From: www.RingsideBiz.com
This past Friday, IBO-USBO and WBC US Champ Joey "Twinkle Fingers" Hernandez came up from Miami to Chi-town for 8 Count Production's Crossroads/ESPN's Friday Night Fights.
Matthaus the Kid and I met him at O'Hare Airport and headed into the city to catch up with some of the teams from the night's events. After meeting and greeting with some of the teams, it was time for some tourist activities as it was Joey's first time taking some leisure time in the Windy City. The only time Twinkle Fingers has been in town was a quick visit to win the USBO Jr. Middleweight title on March 25, 2011, but celebration was back in Miami the next night.
This visit was less pressure for Hernandez and offered some relaxation and opportunities to see parts of the excitement that Chicago contains. Being down close to Lake Michigan, the greatest of the city's parks and Magnificent Mile, Hernandez had the pleasure of seeing Willis Tower, Water Tower Place, Millenium Park and the Bean, and Grant Park with the ongoing Taste of Chicago festival.
Even with uncooperative weather, the Taste of Chicago was booming with food lovers, vendors, and music. We tasted some good gruel. While trying the feature of Robinson's No. 1 Ribs, Hernandez noticed a gentleman scavenging. Without hesitation, he walked of and took the man aside. After speaking briefly, he took the man to a vendor and buys the man a meal of his choice.
This good-will and unselfish act makes for a real champion! Matthaus the Kid was shown some true life lessons that 1.) People will do anything to survive, even scrounging through garbage. It is survival of the fittest. And 2.) It is always better to give than to receive, as well as it help your fellow man.
Champions are not just crowned in the ring! Boxing needs more community giving moments*!
